THE CHARNEL HOUSE
JAMES WALKED INTO THE house with a sense of overwhelming dread. He could not see any farther than a few feet in front of him. He had the uneasy sense that he was walking into a patch of darkness that the Dullahan used to transport themselves in and out of the forest at a momentâs notice. But as James stood there in the darkness, he did not disappear. He was still standing in the house.
He waited for his eyes to adjust to the darkness. He felt like an eternity was passing and that at any moment a Dullahan would grab him by the neck and pull his spine out of his body. James could feel his heart racing in his chest as he let his eyes adjust to the ambient light that was filtering through the house from unseen cracks and crevices in the walls and ceiling.
The room he was standing in came into focus. It was an entryway that lead into a long hallway. The room was fairly small. If James had to guess, he would put it at about five feet square. The walls were covered in black mold, and underneath the mold was what looked like old drywall, which fell away in many places. The air he was breathing felt warm and stale in his mouth, like you would expect to breathe going into a cellar that had been shut for years.
James noticed something in the corner of the entry room that looked like a coat rack. It was about four feet taller than him and had several hooks on it. He took a few small steps over to the rack and realized that it was not an ordinary coat rack. The hooks on the rack were made of various bones of different shapes and sizes. On one of the hooks hung a long black cloak, which resembled the cloaks that he had seen the Dullahan wearing on several occasions.
James felt his heart rise into his throat, and he forced himself to swallow and push it back down. Every fiber in his body was screaming at him to run back out of the house because there was a strong possibility that the owner of the cloak was still somewhere inside waiting for him. He strained his ears for any sign of something in the house with him, but he could hear only silence in the darkness.
James took several more small steps toward the hallway, keeping his arms stretched out to ensure he did not bump into anything that he could not see in the near blackness. He felt as if the walls were closing in on him. Even the hot air was pressing against his skin causing the hair on his arms and neck to stand on end. James felt a strong urge to scream and run back through the great doors, which had disappeared in the gloom behind him. He continued into the hallway and looked back over his shoulder. He was unnerved to see that he could no longer see the small entry room he had just left.
